Nobel Peace Prize recipient and the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela would have been 96 today. He died on December 5, 2013 at 95. Today is the first time the Nelson Mandela International Day has been celebrated since his death.
An anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist, Mandela served as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 after 27 years in prison for his stance against apartheid.
Each July 18, South Africans are called to spend 67 minutes working for the good of others. The duration symbolizes the 67 years that the late Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice.
According to USA Today, The day was unanimously approved in 2009 by the U.N. General Assembly. It was created to honor Mandela and inspire others to carry on his efforts to "take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time," according to a statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation Initiative.
Events in different parts of the world were held to mark this day. In South Africa, the day was marked with a government call to clean up their country. People took time out to serve others.
