The Heart-Wrenching Moment Israeli Zoo Elephants Protecting Two Young Calves

A heart-wrenching footage shows elephants in an Israeli zoo trying to shield their young calves as bomb sirens sound. The video caught at a Tel Aviv Zoological Center, shows the elephants in a pen freely strolling around, when all of a sudden bomb sirens begin sounding signaling an attack by Palestinians.

Instantly one of the animals lets off hostile trumpet calls that make the elephants come together. The large ones circle around two small calves to ensure they are shielded from any threat.

Other zoo animals in the surrounding seem distraught by the danger signal with chimpanzees howling and birds crowing in the background.

As soon as the bomb sirens stop, the herd remains still for a short while before nervously walking ahead as a unit. At one stage a loud sound is heard, though it’s not clear if it’s the impact of a rocket or something different. The footage was filmed by a visitor at the zoo and uploaded on the Internet by a worker at the zoo named Sagit Horowitz. The video has been watched over 60,000 times on YouTube, with most locals sympathizing with the elephants.
The zoo has been on high alert with the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts going to new heights. In the emergency protocol, zoo keepers are supposed to move animals at night to sleeping houses, so they will not be exposed to breaking glass in their cages in times of attack.
