A toddler, whose head had swollen three times its
real size, can now afford to smile, which she has never done before. This was
made possible after a life-threatening surgery was done to decrease the
circumference of its head from 37 to 23 inches.
In 2013, Roona Begun, 3-year-old was rushed to the
hospital in New Delhi in India, after having water in her brain. The rare condition
is also known as hydrocephalus. Surgeons performed a number of surgeries to reduce
the toddler’s head size, and were discharged to go home. However, the surgeons
warned the parents that the baby’s survival chances were minimal. Not only did
Roona survive, she smile and laughed.
Roona is not able to walk yet, due to her heads
weight. However, she can now eat, sleep, crawl and also interact with her
parents.
Facing a huge hospital bill, her parents were
overwhelmed when their child’s condition attracted global kindness leading the
hospital to treat her at no cost. Last year in May and June, the baby went through
some surgery that helped drain excess fluid from the head.
Roona spent three months at the hospital before being discharged in August, and later in December was taken back for more reconstruction on her deformed head. One of Roonas Neurosurgeon, Dr Sandeep Vaishya, has been amazed by the quick recovery; he however says that she still has a long way to go.
Dr Sandeep is now thinking of performing another
procedure as the progress is quite amazing.
Roona’s father, Abdul Rahman, 21-year-old, is
however concerned about the dangers that her daughter is being exposed to.
