Parents were in shock when they saw
kids as young as 5 being beaten at a Romanian kindergarten that is not
licensed. The images were captured after staff forgot to
switch off kindergarten CCTV cameras. Cameras at the kindergarten, in the
Black Sea city of Constanta, were left on from 9a.m in the morning to12 midday,
so parents could watch their kids in lessons and when playing. The staffs’ routine was to switch
off the cameras at noon when the kids were expected to have an afternoon nap.
Social workers and law enforcers
looking at the case say that a parent who visited the kindergarten last year
saw the children being abused and shouted at while cameras are on. The lawyer representing the parents,
Stefan Roman, alleged they discovered that the red wine was added to the kids
fruit juice to make them sleep. He added that the carers gave the kids coffee
when parents were just about to come, so as to stay awake.
On several instances, parents had
allegedly asked why the kids had bruises on their bodies. They were however
told it was because they were hitting one another in the nursery group. Some images on the CCTV were
recorded showing the kids being dragged across the floor, dropped or pushed
when they declined to sleep or to wake up. At one instance, a female staff can
allegedly be heard shouting at a child saying that if the kid doesn’t do what
he is told, he will be given a punch on his head. The child was also told if
they don’t sleep, they will hit so badly and then thrown out in the cold.
Central European News say the
kindergarten is still running because of a legal loophole. However, it will be
closed down when the criminal case is over. Cristina Ivan said that nothing much
the authorities could do since the nursery was not licensed. She said they had no authority to
check them since they were not in their database. Mr Roman said the parents sued the
owners of the kindergarten for compensation together with the criminal
investigations still going on.
He said it was such a horrifying experience for the disturbed parents.Mr Roman said that the nursery had around 60 children.
He says the injuries on the children suggest that this has been going on for a long time. Parents whose children are still at the kindergarten, who saw the images on the television were told that they were influenced by parents of a child who is a
trouble maker as a result of his disability and that they weren’t to be trusted.
